UNBOXED: Star Wars Smuggler's Bounty - "Jabba's Palace"

Another month, another subscription box to break down!  Actually, I’ll be reviewing two this month because I was totally delayed in posting about July’s Smuggler’s Bounty from Funko. My apologies, dear readers!  This month’s box features all sorts of characters found in Jabba’s Palace from return of the Jedi.  Was it worth my $25 investment? You’ll have to hit the jump to find out!

As with all Funko boxes, the box begins with a patch and pin that I continue to have no idea what I’ll do with.  The patch features Leia in her bounty hunter guise as Boussh with the added bonus of a silhouette of Jabba’s palace. The pin features a Gamorrean guard. Both are colorful and fun, plus they feature characters you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the box, so I can’t complain.

The meat of the box begins with a plush Boba Fett. This is somewhere between Funko’s stylized Fabrikations line and their adorable Mopeez.  I’m really not sure what to make of this, truthfully. The small plush looks similar to the barely licensed stuffed animals that you find in a skill crane machine. Boba Fett is one of my favorite characters, but this plush doesn’t look amazing and we just got a totally awesome Pop of the character last month. This isn’t a bad item, per se, but it doesn’t blow me away either.

I am super happy with the next item, however, which is a massive Jabba the Hutt coffee mug. Unfortunately, I don’t drink much coffee so I don’t think I’ll get a ton of use out of this, but it looks amazing for display.  The style and shape of the mug is perfectly fitting for the rotund gangster and actually looks considerably better than the C3P0 mug that appeared a few boxes ago.

The wearable this month is the first non-tshirt for Smuggler’s Bounty and seems to have caused a bit of controversy online.  The black-and-gold snapback hat features C3P0 with the slogan “Programmed for Etiquette.” Personally, I’m not totally sold on snapback hats, as I’m more of a bent bill fitted hat kind of guy.  That being said,  the hat does look pretty good on me, even though I had to put it on the largest setting. My head is big, but isn’t enormous by any means, though I’ve seen a lot of folks complain online about this item because despite being one size fits all, it really doesn’t fit everyone. As someone that has struggled with the inconsistently-sized tshirts in past boxes, I feel their pain but I still think it is cool to get something new and different in the box. Plus the hat looks pretty cool and has a low-key design, which is a huge plus.  I’m proud of my nerdiness, but find that many geek clothes are too intensely designed. This isn’t and I applaud that.

The main event of the box is this month’s exclusive Pop Vinyl, featuring R2D2 in his role as a server aboard Jabba’s sail barge.  I know a lot of people were really hoping that the Pop this month would be Han in Carbonite, especially after that was teased in the video trailer, but I’m really happy with “Bar2D2.” I didn’t have an R2D2 in my collection and this well-detailed figure will look great alongside the rest of my Star Wars collection. R2 is carrying a number of drinks and is ready to serve one of Jabba’s exalted guests on the ill-fated voyage. I really love the detail of R2 being dirtier than the standard figure after his time in the dingy palace, though I would have liked to see the drinks be more varied in color rather than all of them being green (though I’ll have to rewatch these scenes from Return of the Jedi to see if they were multi-colored on film).

Overall, I’m calling this box a pretty big win.  The coffee mug, the hat, and the Pop are all top-notch items that fit the theme well. I do think that they could have gone with different characters than Boba Fett and C3P0 for featured items, as Jabba’s Palace is filled with amazing characters that have not been represented already in the Smuggler’s Bounty box, such as the rancor, Han in Carbonite, disguised Lando, Bib Fortuna or literally any of the other aliens just hanging out in the background.  That being said, I cannot judge this box based upon what it isn’t, but only what was included and the only item I wasn’t thrilled with was the Boba Fett plush.  All in all, this box was well worth the investment.

Looking forward, the next Smuggler’s Bounty promises to be an exciting one with the Death Star theme. Funko has hinted that the Pop will be an “Imperial officer,” so I think we are going to FINALLY get one of my favorite characters in all of Star Wars with a Grand Moff Tarkin figure.  I’m sure we’ll also get some cool Stormtrooper and Darth Vader items, so this box should be really exciting. I cannot wait for September!
