Schrodt's WWE Extreme Rules predictions!

While I mostly use this website to promote my comic work and offer my thoughts on written things (like my Top 10 posts), I did get pretty solid traffic on my Wrestlemania 30 predictions.  Now that I have the WWE Network and can readily watch the monthly pay-per-views, I’ll most m predictions.  There is a healthy crossover of WWE and comics fans, so hopefully y’all don’t mind.  We’ll try it this month with Extreme Rules and then you can tell me if you totally hate it.

HORNSWOGGLE vs. EL TORITO
“Wee-LC Match”
While most American audiences have zero interest in little people wrestling, I have an appreciation for these dudes doing their thing, thanks in part to my obsession with Lucha Libre in high school.  I purchased a bunch of CMLL and AAA tapes off the internet back in the late 90s, most of which included at least a few ‘minis’ matches.  That being said, I’ve really enjoyed Hornswoggle and El Torito’s battles in the past few weeks.  I don’t know what the stipulations are, nor do I care for the way the announcers have mocked these dudes, but I think that if you take a step back from the comedy, you’ll appreciate the work Hornswoggle and El Torito have put in.  I feel like 3MB finally needs a big break, so I have to throw my prediction behind their little guy.
Prediction: HORNSWOGGLE

JACK SWAGGER vs ROB VAN DAM vs CESARO
I have been a huge fan of RVD for 15+ years, but I really feel like he has been forced into this match.  From a storytelling standpoint, I feel like Swagger and Cesaro should battle it out 1-on-1.  But I think that RVD’s inclusion could lead to some solid spots here, especially if they make it a no disqualification match (it is Extreme Rules after all).  Swagger needs the win the most, but I think a lost here would kill Cesaro’s thunder.  Since Cesaro is the hot commodity and his star needs to keep rising, I’ll give him the win in what should be a really solid mach.
Prediction: CESARO

ALEXANDER RUSEV vs XAVIER WOODS and R-TRUTH
It makes me really sad to see Xavier Woods in this match.  He is one of the most talented wrestlers in the company, but other than a next-to-nothing feud with Brodus Clay, he has done almost nothing since jumping up to the main roster.  Putting with R-Truth doesn’t help him much.  I want him to be in a match where he can really showcase his skill and potentially pick up a win, but with how they are booking Rusev (who is also awesome), Woods is just going to be a whipping by here.  Expect lots of double-teaming from Truth and Woods to make this marginally competitive, but the Bulgarian Brute is going to destroy these guys.  Rusev smash. Rusev win.
Prediction: ALEXANDER RUSEV

TAMINA SNUKA vs PAIGE ©
Diva’s Championship Match
In my Wrestlemania recap, I touted this as a match that I would like to see in place of the nightmare Divas battle royal that happened last pay-per-view.  I’m a HUGE fan of Paige and I feel that they’ve done a great job of highlighting her in the last few weeks as she took on every Diva that stood in her way.  When Tamina brings it, she is a great competitor, so this could easily be the best women’s match from the main roster in some time.  Paige is on fire right now and with her having only debuted a few weeks ago, it would be terrible booking for her to drop the title now.  The only problem now is that I don’t see anyone besides Tamina being a true contender—at least not until AJ returns from her time off.
Prediction: PAIGE

BAD NEWS BARRETT vs BIG E ©
Intercontinental Championship
I really dig that the WWE booked a tournament to determine the #1 contender for the Intercontinental Championships.  Tournaments are a great way to make a belt seem more important and I feel that they really accomplished that here.  The only thing that could have been better is to put Big E more at the forefront of the buildup.  He has largely been absent in the buildup, which isn’t much different than his entire title reign.  This should be a fun brawling match though.  Both men are total powerhouses and Bad New Barrett has really brought his A-game in the last few weeks.  I expect this to be one of the best matches of the night, but I don’t expect Big E to leave with the title.
Prediction: BAD NEWS BARRETT

JOHN CENA vs BRAY WYATT
Steel Cage Match
I was wrong with my Wrestlemania prediction between these two men.  I really thought that Bray Wyatt would win that, but while I was wrong, he did steal the show.  This time around, I feel like Wyatt has to pick up the win to save face, especially after Cena’s horrible no-sell promo on Monday after Wyatt’s simply brilliant children’s choir bit just an hour earlier.  Wyatt is the most interesting character in all of WWE right now, but multiple losses to Cena will send him tumbling down to the midcard.  Cena might be the children’s champion, but he needs to take the loss here if they expect to do anything with Wyatt in the long term.  Hopefully Wyatt finds some way to continue to mess with Cena’s mind in this match.  His work in this feud has been memorable and innovative—something I hope he carries into this match.
Prediction: BRAY WYATT

KANE vs DANIEL BRYAN ©
WWE World Championship
I would be really interested in seeing how this feud—which is a natural move given their history—would have been booked had Bryan been available for more TV tapings.  After Wrestlemania, he took time off for his wedding and honeymoon, but then tragedy struck and his father passed away, which took him off TV for some time.  I think that there is a lot of potential in this feud, but without giving them much time to build up, I feel like the stakes are low here.  I expect Bryan to walk out as champion, but suspect there will be some screwy finish that will carry this feud over for one more pay per view before Bryan moves on to his next contender.
Prediction: DANIEL BRYAN

THE SHIELD vs EVOLUTION
With Bryan being off camera, this match has seen the most buildup since Wrestlemania.  I’m really torn on what I think will happen here.  On one hand, I don’t want to see the Shield be held back with a loss here to their more veteran opponents.  Triple H, Batista, and Orton feel stale compared the Shield, who have been so much more exciting since switching to good guys.  But, on the flipside, I feel like Evolution should win this because otherwise there isn’t much of a reason to have reunited the group.  So, on this one, I’m going to go with the team I prefer—The Shield—but expect it to be a dirty finish that ends up keeping the playing field rather level for this feud.
Prediction: THE SHIELD
