DEAR DINOSAUR - The Main Event

Greetings! I’ve totally dropped the ball on the commentary this winter, with a handful of commentaries not being posted and some, like this one, post late.  Sorry y’all!  This week’s strip was a ton of fun for me and does require a bit of explanation, so I wanted to make sure that I posted it.  Head over to to check out this week’s strip and then head back here for the commentary!

In the last strip (posted two weeks ago), Dear Dinosaur was fired from his stint as an American Gladiator due to being excessively violent.   Looking to channel his violent tendencies into something more productive, Dear Dinosaur has taken up professional wrestling in this week’s comic!  I’ve been a huge fan of professional wrestling ever since my childhood and I’ve long planned to work it into the strip.    In fact, I love professional wrestling so much that I’m currently working on an original graphic novel that is somewhat centered on the world of 1980s pro wrestling—expect some news on that soon!

Dear Dinosaur’s opponent in his pro wrestling debut is Mallaki Mathews, the alter ego of my pal Mallaki Kirkpatrick.  I met Mallaki in the fall of 2012 through a mutual friend and joked about how fun it would be to feature him battling Dear Dinosaur—flash forward 15 months or so and here we go!  Mallaki is featured doing some of his signature maneuvers, including defeating Dear Dinosaur with his finisher, The Taste of Chaos.  You should head over to Mallaki’s Facebook fan page to learn more about this talented dude and where you can see him wrestle if you live in the Midwest!

In honor of pro wrestling, this week’s soundtrack is “I am a Real American,” the theme music of Hulk Hogan.  I’ve never been a fan of Hogan (I have long rooted for the villains in pro wrestling), but his theme music is pretty much the best ever.  Not long ago I actually ripped up an old shirt Hogan-style while blasting this song on the computer.  I can assure that it feels just as awesome as you would think!

Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale!  If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, it’s only $10 plus $3 shipping anywhere in the US.  Shoot me an email at if you are interested!
