25 Days of Holiday Sketches!

If we are friends on Facebook, you'll see that I post practice sketches almost every single day. While I have never claimed to be an artist, I do love to draw and with another new webcomic somewhere on the horizon (the long-delayed Left2Right), I need to keep my skills as sharp as I can.  This year I decided to draw 25 sketches for the holiday season and they were a pretty big hit.  Want to check them out? LOOT CRATE Review - December 2014 ANNIVERSARY

My December box came from Loot Crate came over the weekend and it held a lot of promise.  The "Anniversary" box was advertised to include items from Marvel, Batman, The Simpsons, Tetris, and Ghostbusters, so I had very high expectations.  After last month's cool-but-not-amazing "Battle" box, how would this month's Loot Crate stack up?  Hit the jump to find out.

WWE Tables, Ladders, & Chairs Predictions!

The last WWE pay-per-view of the year is upon us!  This weekend’s TLC: TABLES, LADDERS & CHAIRS (and Stairs!) promises to bring the violence with multiple action-packed match-ups, including a handful of exciting title matches.  This is my first TLC pay-per-view and its shaping up to be a good one, even if the World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar is still MIA.  Even without the Beast Incarnate, this should be a great night. Hit the jump to see my picks for the night and remember to follow me Sunday on Twitter when I live tweet the show!

LOOT CRATE Review - November 2014 BATTLE

My second month of Loot Crate held a lot of promise when the "Battle" theme was announced, especially with word that items from Street Fighter and Mega Man would be included.  Even though I'm not a hardcore gamer I had high hopes for this week's box o' nerdy swag, but could it live up to last month's relatively awesome Fear box?  Hit the jump to find out.

WWE Survivor Series Predictions!

It’s SURVIVOR SERIES time!  The “Thanksgiving tradition” was one of my favorites growing up and I am so excited to see that we’ll get a traditional Survivor Series matchup in this year’s show.   Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we have much else going on as only three matches were announced prior to this week’s shows.  Yikes.  That being said, there is quite a bit to be excited about here in the matches that were announced, plus it is absolutely free to new WWE Network subscribers!  This could be a very “interesting” PPV to say the least, so hit the jump to see my thoughts!

MAKIN' LIST MONDAYS: 2014-15 Network Television "First Look"

The 2014-15 network television is in full swing and I am completely blown away by how m any incredible shows are on the air this year.  There has been no better time in history to own a DVR (in the decade or so history of the DVR) as every single night of the week is overflowing with incredible programs.  Rather than waiting until mid-season to breakdown the best shows I’m watching, I thought I’d offer up a special “first look” Top 10 as we are now a handful of episodes into each show on the major networks.  Hit the jump to see what shows I think you should be watching!

LOOT CRATE Review - October 2014: FEAR

After some pressing from a good friend, I joined Loot Crate this month and, as a fun experiment, I thought I would unbox and review this month's haul for all of you to enjoy.  For those of you unfamiliar, Loot Crate is a monthly surprise box filled with goodies that nerds will enjoy.  Each month centers around a different theme and all of the contents somehow relate to that.  The October Loot Crate is themed "Fear," so I had high hopes for all sorts of monstrous goodies inside.  How did it rate? Hit the jump to find out.

WWE Hell in a Cell Predictions!

Last month’s Night of Champions was pretty forgettable, despite having a ton of momentum coming off of an incredible Summer Slam.  We are now just a few days away from HELL IN A CELL, which will be  the first pay-per-view of the Brock Lesnar World Champion era without a World Championship match on the card (the first of many, I assume, thanks to Lesnar’s limited schedule).  The card was thrown together pretty quickly on this one, but there are a ton of awesome matches lined up.  My expectations started pretty low this month, but after this week’s Raw, I’m completely psyched for this weekend’s show.  Hit the jump to see my thoughts!

The ComplEAT Dear Dinosaur update (and cover)!

Friends!  For those of you that backed the Kickstarter, or perhaps are simply interested in purchasing a copy, The ComplEAT Dear Dinosaur trade paperback is currently being wrapped up! Production guru Steve Bryant (whose comics you should also read) is finalizing the pages and colorist BJ Humphrey recently completed work on the cover design for the book!  I'm planning to have the book printed in the next few weeks and all copies shipping out starting in October and November.  I hope you are as happy with the final product as I am!

As a special treat, below you will see the process images for the cover design!

First, I drew the covers on 11 x 17 bristol board in  black and white.

Then I provided BJ with some very poor reference, all done in Microsoft Paint
Then BJ took my horrible choices and made them beautiful!

OPINION - What is killing comic book conventions?

Yesterday, Denise Dorman, the wife of illustrator Dave Dorman posted a rather scathing review of recent convention experiences and the inability for artists to recoup the costs of attending conventions.  She reported on shows that used to be very profitable that no longer are…and then she blamed cosplayers.  You can read her entire post here.  You can read my thoughts below.

In the last few years, cosplayers have become a larger and larger part of the convention scene.  There are now “celebrity cosplayers” whose hard work is so incredible that they become attractions unto themselves at conventions.  This rubs a lot of people the same way.  As one friend of mine put it, “costumes don’t have pockets”—in other words, cosplayers in general do not spend money at conventions.  And this, in my experience, is true.  But I wholeheartedly disagree that cosplayers are the reason artists can’t make money at conventions.  There are a lot of other factors and I’d like to break down a few that I’ve noticed in my 8 years attending conventions, 4 of which have been spent as a “pro” behind the table.

NOW WRITING: Hunting for Artists

One of the most frustrating parts of creating comics is finding artistic collaborators for projects.  Artists need to commit much more time to projects than writers, which means it is all the more important for artists to choose “the right project,” especially early in their careers.  I’ve been lucky to work with some of the most amazing young artists in the industry in the past, but I am always look for new collaborators.  As I turn the corner to work on some new projects, I’m on the lookout for new collaborators.  Are you an artist looking to break into the industry?  Perhaps we could collaborate!  Hit the jump for details on what I’m looking for!

WWE SummerSlam Predictions!

WWE’s second biggest pay-per-view of the year is upon us!  Live from sunny Los Angeles this weekend is Summer Slam!  After a really solid Battleground last month, the bar is pretty high for this show.  Summer Slam has a storied history of exciting match-ups and this year’s installment looks to be no different.  To see my picks for this weekend’s show, hit the jump and don’t forget to follow me on Twitter as I live-tweet the show on Sunday!

NOW WRITING: 2014 Update!

Friends!  I have clearly neglected updating my website since the end of Dear Dinosaur, aside from my monthly WWE event posts (the next of which will be posted on Friday).  I don’t want you to think that means I haven’t been busy, though, as quite the opposite is true.  I’ve been working on a number of projects for the next year and I’m really excited to see them come to fruition.  Here are some highlights:

  • The timeline for my new webcomic Left2Right has obviously shifted multiple times.  I originally envisioned it to start the week after Dear Dinosaur ended, which was now a few months ago.  I’ve been really unhappy with my art on the few pages I’ve produced, which is slowing me down.  Once I get to a point that I’m happy with the pages, I’ll start sending pages to colorist BJ Humphrey.  I suspect we’ll finally see the comic debut on www.twoforonecomics.com this October!
  • The ComplEAT Dear Dinosaur is a little behind schedule.  I’ve worked on cleaning up the pages and I’ve been piecing together the anicillary materials for the book.  The new pin-ups are a bit slower going, but I’m so happy with the work the artists have done that I can’t complain.  My initial plan was to have the books ready this month, but we are now looking towards the books going to the printer in September.
  • My graphic novel The Largest Heart with artist Dean Stahl, which follows the life of a gigantic professional wrestler and his relationship with his estranged son, is looking incredible.  Dean is inking the pitch pages himself and I could not be happier with the end result.
  • I have three upcoming comics that will be released from Grayhaven Comics over the next year.  The first, a two page story in You Are Not Alone 2, the second is a horror western eight pager with Oren Takes Flight artist Ben Holliday, and the last is a really fun Dr. Seuss-inspired three page story in Lil’ Kaiju.
  • I will begin releasing short comics digitally via Comixology late this year.  These 16 page stories will introduce a lot of new concepts that I’ve wanted to write for years and I’ve lined up some really great artists.  The two stories currently being worked on are a sword-and-sorcery tale and a surreal secret agent story.  Both should be out by the end of the year.
  • Nessy: Sword of Ohio is about 1/3 of the way completed with the art from Markk Cooper, whose manga-esque style is unlike any art that I’ve ever had teamed with my writing.  I am so excited for this one-shot, which will be released digitally first.
  • Going a bit slower, but looking amazing is Stray, the silent graphic novel I wrote a few years ago.  Tara Coble has really stepped up her game with the designs and I hope to pitch this to publishers by the end of the year.
  • Finally, The King of Cool, my one-shot with Comic Aid Press is in the final stages of production.  I’ll have it ready for conventions this Fall and all profits will go to charity!

That about covers it!  Watch out on Twitter and Facebook for more updates as these comics come together!

WWE Battleground Predictions!

Battleground is the last stop before WWE’s second biggest pay-per-view of the year, Summer Slam!  As such, I expect that this event will feature more setup than the last few pay-per-views, with very few feud-ending matchups.  Instead, we’ll see the groundwork laid for Summer Slam in August.  That being said, it is shaping up to be a really exciting show.  After Money in the Bank was a bit of a disappointment, I have high hopes for Battleground.  Hit the jump for my predictions for Sunday’s event and remember to follow me on Twitter on Sunday when I live-tweet the show!

WWE Money in the Bank Predictions!

WWE’s exciting Money in the Bank pay-per-view is this Sunday and so that means it’s time for me to post my predictions!  The Money in the Bank concept was introduced in a five-year gap where I wasn’t watching wrestling and this is the first time I’ll be able to watch its namesake PPV live.  After catching up on past Money in the Bank matches on the WWE Network, I’m incredibly excited for this event.  With two big ladder matches, this could be one of the most entertaining events of the year (even with a handful of throwaway matches).  Hit the jump to see my picks for the event and then follow me on Twitter Sunday night as I live-tweet the show!

Schrodt's WWE Payback predictions!

I tried this out Wrestlemania XXX and it went well, then tried again with Extreme Rules and people responded positively.  So, for the third WWE pay-per-view in a row, I’m offering up my predictions!  This Sunday’s Payback comes to you live from Rosemont, IL—a place I’m very familiar with (the arena is just a short drive from where Wizard World Chicago takes place every August).  I actually considered buying tickets for this show, but ultimately passed.  None of this information is important.  On with the predictions! (and don't forget about the Dear Dinosaur campaign on Kickstarter!)

Dear Dinosaur - Behind the Scenes: Volume V Cover

This week's all new Dear Dinosaur (the second to last ever), I'll be showcasing the cover for volume five.  Since I had already done two comic covers (I = X-Men, IV = Evil Kineval), two movie posters (II = Pulp Fiction, Complete = Star Wars), and only one album cover (III = Abbey Road), I wanted to do another album cover this time around.  I've been toying with this idea for months and even did poling on Facebook and Twitter.  Below are 9 potential options I came up with.  Which is your favorite?

Schrodt's WWE Extreme Rules predictions!

While I mostly use this website to promote my comic work and offer my thoughts on written things (like my Top 10 posts), I did get pretty solid traffic on my Wrestlemania 30 predictions.  Now that I have the WWE Network and can readily watch the monthly pay-per-views, I’ll most m predictions.  There is a healthy crossover of WWE and comics fans, so hopefully y’all don’t mind.  We’ll try it this month with Extreme Rules and then you can tell me if you totally hate it.

DEAR DINOSAUR - "The Man with the Plan"

This week’s Dear Dinosaur commentary is a bit late—my bad!  I got wrapped up towards the end of the week with lots of un-fun non-comic stuff and then I very unexpectedly attended C2E2 this past Saturday (more on that later).  So, even though we are just a few days away from a new Dear Dinosaur, here is today’s commentary!  Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com to check out the strip, then come back here for the commentary!

MAKIN' LISTS MONDAYS - WrestleMania 30 Reactions

Last night’s WrestleMania XXX was an insane evening filled with twists and turns, some of which were well received and others that angered fans both old and new.  I ended up 4-of-8 on my predictions, though I have to say in almost all of the cases that I was happy to be wrong (with a few exceptions).  To follow-up my predictions posted last week, today’s list isn’t a countdown, but rather ten thoughts that I had after watching this year’s WrestleMania.

Schrodt's Wrestlemania 30 Predictions!

As many of you know, in addition to being a huge comic book nerd, I’ve been a fan of professional wrestling my entire life.  Last year, I geeked it up by posting my predictions for the biggest pay-per-view of the year for WWE, Wrestlemania XXX, and it was well enough received that I thought I would do the same this year.  The upside to this year is that thanks to the WWE Network, I will be watching the show live and will be Tweeting my thoughts throughout the night.  So, if you don’t mind me nerding about something other than comics (and hockey and Saturday Night Live and food), check that out.  In the meantime, hit the jump for my thoughts on the biggest night for pro wrestling this year (seriously, there are 66 wrestlers on the card—how cool is that? The first Wrestlemania only had 18.).

MAKIN' LISTS MONDAY - Top 10 Marvel Films

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in just a few weeks and so I thought it would be a fun time to rock a new Top 10 list.  There are currently 9-ish entries into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with 1 film so close that I suppose it counts.  I could have waited until after Captain America is released to make a true Top 10, but I thought it would be more fun to build up some hype for the film to do it earlier.  Hit the jump to see my countdown.

You can be drawn into Left2Right!

We are just a few weeks away from the finale of Dear Dinosaur and the debut of my brand new webcomic, LEFT2RIGHT!  Left2Right (yes, one word) is an action/comedy about two young dudes trying to take back their city from the clutches of a violent and incredibly flashy street gang.  It’s going to be super awesome and I’m really excited to be working with colorist BJ Humphrey and letterer Adam Wollet on this series!

But wait—there’s more!  My good friend Devin Michaels is in the tail end of a Kickstarter campaign for Capitalism and Other Stories.  In order to help her out, you can be drawn into Left2Right with a speaking role!  In addition to this, you’ll get the original 11 x 17” art page, a Left2Right poster signed by me and BJ, and a copy of Capitalism and Other Stories.  Go check it out right now and bid today!
