DEAR DINOSAUR - "In Da Club"

Welcome to another installment of Dear Dinosaur commentary!  This week’s strip, “In Da Club” is the start of a three-part storyline that will play out over weeks 13-15.  You can check out the strip here: http://www.twoforonecomics.com/?p=2067

Astute readers will notice the reappearance of Rodney Raptor, Dear Dinosaur’s ill-mannered friend that first appeared in Volume II when Dear Dinosaur attempted to set up Krunch’s friend Maria on a date.  He appeared again later in the volume with Maria at Krunch’s birthday party.  This also marks the first appearance of Trips the triceratops in quite some time.  He made sporadic appearances in Volume I, but was never actually named.

I was able to sneak in a few fun gags into this week’s strip, starting in Panel 4 where Dear Dinosaur is applying “Sex Panther,” the infamous cologne from the movie Anchorman (one of my personal favorites).  In Panel 5, Dear Dinosaur orders a Zima, which some of our younger readers may not recognize (making me feel incredibly old).  Zima was an alcoholic beverage launched in the early 90s with a huge marketing campaign that proclaimed it was “Zomething Different.”  It had quite a reputation as being a “girly man” beverage, much like Smirnoff Ice today.  Finally, in Panel 5, we see Dear Dinosaur doing a wicked version of the robot dance, referring to himself as Robosaurus.  Robosaurus is an unexpectedly popular guest star in the strip that made appearances in both Volume I and II (and will show up later in Volume III).

The only reason that Dear Dinosaur claims to be the lead singer of Maroon 5 is because I was watching the episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Adam Levine while working on this strip (which was actually pretty funny, despite the fact that Levine/Maroon 5’s music is atrocious).  Had I been watching something else, I probably would have had Dear Dinosaur claiming to be the star of a TV series that this girl might have heard of, but not actually watched (like Justified, Boardwalk Empire, or Ice Road Truckers).

Be sure to check back next week for Part 2 of this storyline, “One Night (Last) Stand!”

Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale!  If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, it’s only $10 plus $3 shipping anywhere in the US.  Shoot me an email at rlschrodt@gmail.com if you are interested!

DEAR DINOSAUR - "Really Big Deal"

Last week’s commentary for Dear Dinosaur went over pretty well, so I’ll keep it up and those few of you out there that love the strip can have something extra to look forward to on Thursdays.  This week’s strip, which starts the second half of Volume III is “Really Big Deal” and can be found here: http://www.twoforonecomics.com/?p=2051 This is mostly a setup week and was one of the harder strips for me to do.  I wanted to remind readers of the looming threat of Disaster Dan (who debuted in week 3 of Volume III) but didn’t want that to be the sole focus of the strip. Since I knew that the fictional version of me would be delivering the news, it worked out nicely to have the main joke of the strip being Dear Dinosaur’s continued disrespect for his editor.

Small bit of trivia here—in the second panel you can see that I’m wearing a tshirt for the band Murder by Death.  If you haven’t checked them out, you should (www.murderbydeath.com).  They are an amazing indie group out of Indiana that I’ve been obsessed with for the last decade or so.  Their music is a weird blend of rock, country, and blues and a lot of their songs are about whiskey and the devil.  Plus, their original drummer is actually a very distant cousin of mine.  Their sixth full-length album came out last fall (Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon) and is about as brilliant as all of their other albums.  Check them out!

Even smaller bit of trivia—in the last panel Dear Dinosaur reveals that he can’t respect me because of my neckbeard.  This harkens back to the final strip of Volume I, where Dear Dinosaur made similar criticisms.  In truth, however, this panel is no longer correct as I am now sporting a full beard.  But for the sake of continuity, my fictional is still rocking it Abe Lincoln style.  So, if you see me at a convention this summer, don’t be annoyed that I don’t look exactly as I draw myself.

Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale!  If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, it’s only $10 plus $3 shipping anywhere in the US.  Shoot me an email at rlschrodt@gmail.com if you are interested!

Dan Con 2013 - Preorder and Sketch Prices

Since we are about a month out, I am opening up my pre-order list for DanCon sketches.  I’d like to do as many of these as possible before the show, though I will be taking some commissions at the show (most likely just small sketches and sketchcards).  All sketches will be done in full color and I’ll draw just about anything you want—let your imagination go crazy as I love a challenge.

Sketchcards are $1 each or you can buy an entire set of six cards for $5.  I will have some themed sets done ahead of time for purchase at the show (Adventure Time, Regular Show, Justice League, Avengers, etc.)

Small sketchbook sketches will be $5.  These will be done at approximately 6” x 9” and should be kept to 1 character if possible.  This is also what I’ll charge to do a full color sketch in your sketchbook. This is also what I'd charge for a single character blank sketch cover.

Medium sketches are 9” x 12” and $10.  I’ll draw up to 2 characters on these without an extra charge.

Large sketches will be done on 11” x 17” Bristol board and are $15.  I can only take a limited number of these before the show as they are a lot more work on my end.
If you are interested, drop me a line at rlschrodt@gmail.com, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

DEAR DINOSAUR - "Romance for One"

I really have not been using this website to its full potentially, especially when it comes to promoting my webcomic, Dear Dinosaur, which is updated at www.twoforonecomics.com.  So, from now on, every Thursday afternoon, I’ll be posting a link directly to this week’s strip, as well as some fun information about the comic!  You can check out today’s comic “Romance for One” here:  http://www.twoforonecomics.com/?p=2040

For those of you that haven’t been following the strip, you should start at the beginning and read up to this point.  But to catch you up, earlier this volume (which started in December), Dear Dinosaur’s wife Krunch—a feisty American Gladiator—left him after months of frustration (which you can read in Volume II).  This is Dear Dinosaur’s first Valentine’s Day alone.

This is actually the second Valentine’s Day strip of the series though.  Dear Dinosaur premiered as a regular strip on Two For One—after a short test run on Filler Friday—on February 9, 2012 with a Valentine’s themed strip.  You can check that out here: http://www.twoforonecomics.com/?p=471!  Though I should warn you that the art is really rough as I still didn’t really know what I was doing back then.

When I first drew this week’s strip, I was worried that Armando would be too handsome to be single for the rest of his life.  I had unintentionally given him a rather chiseled jaw and I know that some ladies love the Steven Seagal pony tail.  To make him less attractive, I gave him a crazy cat sweater.
Also, the last joke in the strip was changed from the original script.  Originally, Armando was to ask Dear Dinosaur if his plans actually meant that he would be eating ice cream and watching porn, but after I decided to make Dear Dinosaur read Fifty Shades of Gray in the bath, the porn joke didn’t work quite as well (since that books is basically porn anyway).

Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale!  If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, it’s only $10 plus $3 shipping anywhere in the US.  Shoot me an email at rlschrodt@gmail.com if you are interested!

Updates and DanCon 2013

Woah.  I mean, seriously.  Woah.  I haven't updated this site in far too long.  Rest assured, however, I've been crazy busy working on new comics.  Here is what you might have missed:
  • The third volume of my awesome webcomic Dear Dinosaur launched in December over at www.twoforonecomics.com and has been a huge hit so far.  Check it out every Thursday!
  • I'm working with an amazing artist to prep my second webcomic, The Largest Heart.  It is a great mixture of the Tim Burton's masterpiece Big Fish and the bizarre world of 1980s professional wrestling.  Look for it this summer!
  • I have a ton of new anthology stories coming up that I can hopefully announce in the near future.  I'm working with some really cool companies on some very awesome concepts.
  • Oren Takes Flight is very close to being pitched to publishers.  The all-ages fantasy epic is one of the most exciting projects I've ever worked on and should have no problem finding a home!
  • I am extremely close to landing a HUGE gig that will totally change my career.  I really want to tell you about it, but I've been sworn to secrecy.
  • I might be launching a THIRD webcomic (possibly before I launch the second).  Like Dear Dinosaur, I'll be writing and drawing this project.
I'll make a big formal post about this later, but I'll be attending DAN CON 2013 in Orland Park, IL on March 16th!  This will be my first time as a guest at the show, but I'm super psyched to be part of it.  There is a great crew of creators that will be there and the show's runner, Dan Royer, is a top notch dude.  I'm taking preorders now for sketches and sketchcards.  Here is my price list:
  • Full color sketchcards are just $1!  You can get a set of six cards for just $5!
  • 6" x 9" full color sketches are $5
  • 9" x 12" full color sketches are $10
  • 11" x 17" full color sketches are $15
If you are interested in preordering a commission, shoot me an email at rlschrodt@gmail.com!
