Happy Thursday, Dear Dinosaur fans! Today kicks off the as-yet-unnamed fifth volume of Dear Dinosaur! Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com to check out the first strip in this volume, which finds Dear Dinosaur dealing with the fallout of the shocking volume four finale. How will Dear Dinosaur deal with the cancellation of his advice column? Check out this week's comic to find out, then head back here for official commentary!
This week's dream-within-a-dream strip shows that Dear Dinosaur isn't taking the big cancellation too well. This was a difficult strip for me to write because I wanted to retain some of the trademark humor of the series while still pushing the dramatic situation that our hero is facing. I hoped by building absurdities early in the strip and then abruptly twisting in to the dramatic ending that it would have more effect. I hope that this worked for readers especially since this is the most vulnerable we've ever seen Dear Dinosaur.
In the first dream sequence, Dear Dinosaur is visited by the "Gods of the Internet," which includes a demonic version of Ryan the Editor, the popular guest star Robosaurus, Grumpy Cat, Psy (the singer of that dreadful "Gangam Style" song), and Chuck Norris. The second dream sequence features a bear version of Krunch, which isn't what I had originally designed. Originally, Krunch was going to be a grotesque insectoid, but I had trouble drawing her arms the way I envisioned, so I went with the bizarre motherly bear design.
So, I need y'all to do a huge favor this Friday. Head over to http://www.cslumberparty.libsyn.com to check out the Double Page Spread Podcast, hosted by my friend Wendi Freeman. I'm the guest this week and I'm making a big announcement that I won't post on the site until Monday. Check out the interview, post a comment, and spread the word!
This week's soundtrack song is "Welcome to My Nightmare" by Alice Cooper, which is the song from which I stole the title of this week's strip.
