Last week kicked off the stretch of new formats for Dear Dinosaur, which will run through the remainder of the volume. The strip, which featured Dear Dinosaur hosting a talk show, was well received and even received praise from the crew of TV's Bitchin' Kitchen (whose star Nadia G. appeared in the strip!). Hopefully this week's new format, a game show, will be just as well received. Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com to check it and then come back for the official commentary!
Even though I knew that I wanted to do a game show parody early on, I actually had a really hard time putting this one together. I'm a huge fan of game shows and game show parodies, so I had a lot of different directions to go with this. I ultimately decided to play up the idea that the rules didn't make a ton of sense and were completely arbitrary, which fits with Dear Dinosaur's overall behavior. The other route I considered was to have all three contestants guess things that Dear Dinosaur would normally suggest, like eating people, only to have the correct answer be something normal and mundane.
This week sees the return of Iguana Don, who hadn't appeared since the Volume I strip Lizard Lovin' which ran in May 2012.
Dear Dinosaur's appearance here is modeled after Gene Rayburn, the host of Match Game, which is my all-time favorite game show. The actual game was fairly irrelevant, as the show centered around the wisecracks made by the often-drunk panel of celebrities. GSN used to show it pretty regularly and so you can probably catch it there (though I don't know for certain since my cable provider dropped the channel).
Today's soundtrack song is a video of some dude dancing on the Price is Right to Guile's stage music from Street Fighter 2.
Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale! If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, it’s only $10 plus $3 shipping anywhere in the US. Shoot me an email at email@example.com if you are interested!
