If you’ve been following the website, it’s been a crazy week over here in Schrodt-ville, with lots of big announcements and the upcoming release of Youngblood #78 next week. Woo-hoo! Even with all of this going on, the Dear Dinosaur train has not been derailed. In fact, we are pressing on stronger than ever! This week’s awesome new Dear Dinosaur is live over at www.twoforonecomics.com. Check it out and then come on back for commentary!
So, obviously, this week’s strip is clearly a Doctor Who joke. If you didn’t catch that, then I completely failed you and should probably just give up on making comics right now (as if I could really give this jet-setting lifestyle up!). I did my best to cram a lot of Who jokes in here, including Ryan’s “Bigger on the Inside” t-shirt, the “Advice Box” TARDIS, Dear Dinosaur carrying a sonic screwdriver that looks like a screwdriver, the threat of a Dalek army, and Krunch wearing Tom Baker’s scarf. I had considered throwing in a few more references in the background, but it was already getting really busy in the main image.
Most of this came together really easily, though there were a few things I tripped up on. I had a hard time deciding which “Entertainment Knight” to have in the letter from the BBC. I originally planned to draw Patrick Stewart, but decided to open it up to my friends on Twitter and Facebook to decide. My mom was actually the first person to suggest Elton John and I decided to draw him because he would be a lot more fun to draw than some of the other suggestions. His look is unique and fairly cartoony already, so it fit my style.
The other thing I struggled with was deciding on an outfit for Dear Dinosaur. My initial design was a straight rip-off of Matt Smith’s current outfit, but I wanted something a tad more unique. I ended up sketching out a few options on an old envelope and then gave it to my wife to decide. She really liked the long-coat/hat combo. Other options included a leather jack/leather pants combo, a tuxedo, a Mormon missionary outfit, and more.
This week’s soundtrack is not the Doctor Who theme song or an Elton John song, both of which would be way too easy. Instead, I wanted something that has a similar trippy feel but isn’t quite as obvious. I chose the “dark disco” song “Waves” by Blondfire. It would totally work as the actual theme song for Dear Dinosaur if those damn Brits weren’t blocking it.
Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale! If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested!
