Today’s all new Dear Dinosaur strip is posted at www.twoforonecomics.com and that means it’s time for some commentary! If you haven’t checked out today’s strip—“A Dinosaur Always Pays His Debts”—check it out here and then come back for the commentary!
One of the biggest surprises out of working on Dear Dinosaur is how popular the character of Robosaurus has been. His debut in “Yar! A Wedding!” from Volume I was such a hit that I had multiple requests to bring the character back, despite my initial plan to only have him appear in one strip. That led to the Volume II strip “Robosaurus Returns,” which was equally as well-received. Hopefully people dig his appearance here just as much as they had his previous guest spots!
I decided to play with the format a bit here by having Disaster Dan’s letter to Dear Dinosaur be typed instead of handwritten into the strip. It definitely makes this strip stand out, though I do wish I would have used a clearer font as it is a bit hard to read when reduced (though it looks great on the full sized 11 x 17 page). My original plan was to do a letter-by-letter cut out like a ransom note, but I found that to be absolutely maddening. I can see why only genuine psychopaths take the time to do that!
If you follow me on Twitter, you already know that I’m a HUGE Game of Thrones fan and that my fandom is borderline obsession. I’ve been meaning to sneak some GoT jokes into the comic for some time now, but haven’t been able to do it organically until now. Robosaurus’s successes as a reality competition show judge could feasibly lead to guest spots on television shows, so why not go with one of my person favorites? I had considered making this panel much fuller with more characters from the series, but I felt that it would be “too much” and take away from Robosaurus’s cameo, which needed to be the focal point. So, instead, you just get a few of my favorite characters, Bronn the sellsword and Tyrion the “Imp” with a sneaky appearance by Varys the so-called “Master of Whispers” in the background.
Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale! If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, it’s only $10 plus $3 shipping anywhere in the US. Shoot me an email at email@example.com if you are interested!
