Merry Christmas from the Krampus!

Happy Holidays friends!  As it is Christmas morning, I wanted to give everyone a special present--even if you don't celebrate Christmas, you still deserve something.  This year has been a real roller-coaster for my comic career, but was ultimately the best year I've had since trying to make it into the comic book industry (a certain Youngblood issue was definitely the biggest part of that!).  To celebrate this, and to say thank you for all of your support, I wanted to share with you the first eight page of my graphic novella How the Krampus Saved Christmas

MAKIN' LISTS MONDAY: Top 10 Network Television Shows (Mid-Season 2013-14)

At the end of last television season, I posted my Top 10 favorite network television shows of the year and now that we are just a few weeks away from the launch of the mid-season replacement shows, I figured it would be good time to rank how the 2013-14 network TV season is coming together.  I’m a TV junkie and I’m glad to share this obsession with you!

DEAR DINOSAUR - A Visit from St. Dinosaur

Merry Christmas from Dear Dinosaur!  Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com for today's all new strip, then jump back here for the official commentary for this week's whimsical comic!

Last year's Christmas strip, which featured six years' worth of Dinosaur family Christmas cards was one of my favorite strips of Volume III and I feel that it really set the bar high for this year's Christmas strip.  I wanted to do something different this year, so I went with a poem of sorts, illustrated to show the absurdity of Dear Dinosaur's current situation.  It is a pretty simple concept, but I think it was executed well thanks to how easy it is to slip into the sing-songy cadence of "A Visit from St. Nicholas (T'was the night before Christmas)."  Plus this helped me bridge the gap between last week's strip, which saw Dear Dinosaur working for Word the Bird and next week's, which features the return of Robosaurus.

This week's soundtrack is "Fairytale in New York" by the Pogues.  It is one of the darkest, but most interseting "holiday" songs I've ever heard and is probably the finest work of the Pogues brief but amazing catalogue.  Not your usual Christmas fare, but neither is Dear Dinosaur!

Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale!  If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, it’s only $10 plus $3 shipping anywhere in the US.  Shoot me an email at rlschrodt@gmail.com if you are interested!

DEAR DINOSAUR - "Go Cluck Yourself"

What’s up Dear Dinosaur fans?  I hope that all of you are enjoying your Thursday and it is about to get back—that’s right, Dear Dinosaur is back!  You know the drill—head to www.twoforonecomics.com to check out the strip and then come back here for the official commentary!  And don’t forget to check out this week’s Double Page Spread Podcast!  I was interviewed by my good friend Wendi Freeman about comics, random tidbits of pop culture, and I make a big announcement about the future of Dear Dinosaur!

Ryan Schrodt on Double Page Spread Podcast!

Friends! Our intrepid "hero" Ryan Schrodt (that's me!) was the special guest this week on my friend Wendi Freeman's podcast Double Page Spread! Ryan talks about breaking into comics, working with Rob Liefeld, his hatred of Sandra Bullock, tells a very dark story about Sean Patrick Flannery, and we all learn a little bit about the English language from Fred Durst!  Check it out!

PLUS - Ryan makes a major announcement regarding the future of Dear Dinosaur and announces a brand new webcomic for 2014!

DEAR DINOSAUR - Unwanted

Last week's Dear Dinosaur was a bit of trick, as it was just a repeat of the previous week, but with a much better scan.  We are back with an all-new strip this week, though!  Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com and then check back here for the official commentary.  It will be awesome!

This week Dear Dinosaur decides to look for a new job after weeks of toiling away without much direction.  This really kicks the main storyline of Volume 5 into gear as Dear Dinosaur's struggles to find employment will cover the next several weeks.  I don't want to give too much away, but the newspaper articles give some hints on where things are going from here!

Since Krunch is wearing a Dead Kennedys shirt, it only seems fitting to use on of their songs as our soundtrack today.  Enjoy today's song, "Kill the Poor!"

Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale!  If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, it’s only $10 plus $3 shipping anywhere in the US.  Shoot me an email at rlschrodt@gmail.com if you are interested!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I know that  many of you stopped by today for all-new Dear Dinosaur commentary, as is your Thursday custom.  Unfortunately, last week's strip feature a horrible scan and so you didn't get the best possible Dear Dinosaur experience.  Since most of you will either be spending today with your families or lining up at Buy-Lots for Black Friday deals, I decided to use this as a Dear Dinosaur "bye week."  I've posted a corrected scan of last week's strip over at Two For One Comics for your enjoyment.  Next week we'll pick up with an all-new Dear Dinosaur strip that features our hero looking for a new job.  It will be awesome!

I do want to say how incredibly thankful I am for all of the support that you have given me this year with my comic book career. 2013 was both an incredibly difficult and an incredibly rewarding year for my comic book career.  Some things fell apart on me and some things succeeded beyond my wildest dreams.  I lived a lifelong dream by being published by Image Comics and I was welcomed warmly by the fan community at more comic book conventions than I've ever done before.  Things are already shaping up for 2014 to be an even bigger year for me and I could not be in this position without all of you.  From the very bottom of my heart, I thank you all.  Whether you have known me for years, just started following me via social media, or met me at a convention, you have had a positive impact on my life and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Much love,

Ryan

DEAR DINOSAUR - Happiness is an Empty Bottle

Hey there Dear Dinosaur fans!  It's a brand new Thursday and that means a brand new Dear Dinosaur!  Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com to read the strip, then enjoy today's official commentary.

I have to be 100% honest here and let you folks know that I'm really disappointed with today's comic.  The jokes are solid and the art isn't bad, but the scan totally sucks.  I've mentioned this before, but I take the Dear Dinosaur pages to a local store for scanning and 9 times out of 10, I'm happy with the results and, if I'm not, I usually have enough time to go back for a re-scan.  Unfortunately, due to hectic schedule this week, I did not even look at today's scan until late Wednesday night--long after the store closed.  The scan was clearly done in black-and-white, which completely messed up the gray tones that I very carefully put together.  As such, this really looks like shit and I apologize.  I'll post the corrected version next week!

This week's strip is makes a lot of jokes about Peanuts, which is one of my favorite comics of all time, despite how schmaltzy it is.  I also gave Trips the Triceratops a "Mouse Rat" shirt, which is a reference to Andy Dwyer's band on Parks and Recreation.

Today's soundtrack song is "You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.  I went through a huge swing phase in high school thanks to BBVD that was pretty ridiculous.  This song was my introduction to them and remains a favorite of mine!

Finally, this week’s strip, along with many others is for sale!  If you’d like to buy the original 11 x 17 art, it’s only $10 plus $3 shipping anywhere in the US.  Shoot me an email at rlschrodt@gmail.com if you are interested!

EVENT CANCELLATION - Mellow Blue Planet Comic and Arts Festival

I'm really sorry for anyone that was hoping to meet me at the Mellow Blue Planet Comic and Arts Festival in Rock Island on November 17th.  Unfortunately, my car broke down last night and dealing with that is causing me to cancel the appearance.  I am completely bummed about this and I hope to see all of you there next year!

Double Page Spread podcast interview...delayed!

Bad news, friends! Due to some technical issues, the podcast that I recorded with my friend Wendi Freeman for her Double Page Spread podcast will not be posted this week.  We had a great hour-plus long talk last week where I made a big announcement and told a bunch of ridiculous jokes.  Sadly, this is totally lost.  I know I had mentioned this on the site last week, but it won’t be posted for a little while yet as we will need to re-record the show.  Sorry y’all!

Things you might have missed on the podcast:
  • The big announcement (coming soon)
  • Matthew McConaughey as the Silver Surfer
  • Who could play Galactus in a Matthew McConaughey as Silver Surfer movie
  • My hatred for the film Lars and the Real Girl

DEAR DINOSAUR - Volume IV: Jumping the Megalodon!

So, I have to apologize for the fact that I've dropped the ball on posting commentary for Dear Dinosaur!  Last week's strip, which was the finale for Volume IV was posted without commentary because I was on vacation in Ohio.  Sorry y'all!  I'll add a few tidbits in with this week's commentary, but first you need to head over to www.twoforonecomics.com to check out the final inked cover for Dear Dinosaur Volume IV!

Thursday, October 17, 2013

DEAR DINOSAUR - Morally and Financially Bankrupt

I totally dropped the ball last week on the commentary, which is a damn shame because of the awesome work by Ben Holliday and Adam Wollet on the special Dear Dinosaur page they put together.  I really hope y'all dug it and you should definitely check out their work!  Ben and Adam are part of the creative team behind my upcoming all ages graphic novel OREN TAKES FLIGHT and both have HUGE futures in the industry!  Now, on to this week!  Dear Dinosaur takes a major turn this week as the Shadowy Board of Editorial Figures drops a major bomb on our hero!  Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com to check it out, then head back here for the commentary!

MAKIN' LISTS MONDAYS! - Top 10 Halloween Heroes!

Last week we looked at my favorite antagonists from movies best fit for Halloween.  Whether the films were psychological thrillers or frightening horrors or somewhere in between, they all featured great “villains.”  This week, I’m turning that around and looking at my favorite “Halloween Heroes,” the best of the best protagonists from films best experienced in the Halloween season.

I’m going to follow the “Gozer Rule” again for this countdown.  Last week I let Gozer stand in for all of the antagonists of the film Ghostbusters because it was too hard to narrow it down.  This time, I’ll let the most memorable representative cover the entire group so that I’m not struggling to fit all four Ghostbusters in a ten issue countdown.

MAKIN' LIST MONDAYS!: Top 10 Movie Monsters

Just pretend I posted this yesterday as I had originally intended.

Halloween season is upon us and I have to admit, I am a little torn.  I really love crazy scary movies and things, but at the same time, I have these insane neighbors that build this massive Halloween display ever year.  This may sound pretty awesome until you find out that they play “spooky” music loud enough that I can hear it in my house, over my TV, every night in October.  It’s the worst and it totally ruins Halloween for me, which makes me sad.  To recapture my love for the haunted holiday, I’m going to do a handful of Top 10 lists that cover my love for horror movies that you should enjoy every October.  First up, Top 10 Movie Monsters!

See me at MCBA FallCon in St. Paul, MN on Oct 5th!

Hey y’all!  If you came out to the Burlington Public Library over the weekend to see me, thank you so much!  I had a blast at their annual Comic Book Day event and hope that I’m invited back next year!  (Plus I had an incredible lunch at Jerry’s Main Lunch, which is a tiny little diner that has been part of Burlington for decades—best fried pork tenderloin ever).

If you didn’t get to meet me this past weekend, and you live within driving distance from the Twin Cities area in Minnesota, you are in luck!  I’ll be attending the Midwest Comic Book Association’s annual FallCon comic book convention on Saturday October 5th!  I had a blast at the show last year and at MCBA’s SpringCon this past May.  Come see me, as well as the other incredible guests, including guest of honor Mark Waid!

If you would like to preorder some art, I’d love to draw it in advance!  I only draw the larger pieces as preorders, as well as sketchcard sets.  If you want to order one, email me at rlschrodt@kendallhunt.com!  Below is a list of my prices:

Any character in full glorious color in trading card size!

An Inspiring Non-Comics Story that Inspires Me to Make Comics

I’m completely addicted to podcasts during my day job.  It keeps me sane and really helps the day go by faster.  One of my favorite podcasts is Janet Varney’s The JV Club, which is part of the Nerdist Podcast Network.  Janet, perhaps best known as the voice of Korra on the voice of Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra, interviews various women in the entertainment industry about how their teenage years influence who they are today.  It’s a really interesting podcast that I can really relate to, even as a male listener, due to how insane my high school and college experiences were.

That being said, I heard a story on an old episode with Kerry Kenney today that really inspired me to the point that I wanted to share with my readers, especially those who want to break into comics.

DEAR DINOSAUR...or NERDY LITTLE SECRETS?!

Have you been to www.twoforonecomics.com yet?  Are you shocked to find that this week’s Dear Dinosaur isn’t actually a Dear Dinosaur strip?  Don’t worry, though, this is only temporary!  The local Staples where I get Dear Dinosaur scanned each week had a malfunctioning scanner this week, so I was unable to scan this week’s page (which is pretty awesome).  In it’s place, you get a sneak peek at Nerdy Little Secrets!

Nerdy Little Secrets is a new “occasional webcomic” that I will be running through www.twoforonecomics.com sporadically as part of the Filler Friday semi-anthology comic. NLS is a series of confessions from your favorite pop culture superstars.  Everything from Star Wars to Lord of the Rings to comics to video games to pretty much anything you can think of will be posted.  Some of them are shocking, but all of them are ridiculous.  First up is Luke Skywalker, who reveals exactly when he found out that Leia is his sister.

The next Nerdy Little Secrets comic will run tomorrow on Filler Friday.  I should have a solid run for the next few weeks while we build up Filler Friday submissions.  Check it out!

Appearance Announcement! COMIC BOOK DAY @ Burlington Public Library on 9/28!

Greetings friends!  I have done a horrible job of using the site to promote my upcoming appearances, but I have a slew of them to announce for the next few weeks.  Hopefully you don’t mind the short notice!  First up, this Saturday, September 28th, I will be taking part of the Comic Book Day! at the Burlington Public Library in Burlington, Iowa!  They were kind enough to invite me to be a featured speaker and to hawk my wares.  You should come check it out!  You can learn more on their website and/or Facebook page!

The event involves a number of speakers, including fellow Iowan comic book creators John Ira Thomas and Sharean Morishita; and I’ve been told me my friend, comic book superstar Phil Hester will be making an appearance!  They will also have a screening of Iron Man 3, a Nerf firing range filled with zombies, craft tables, costume contests, and a Superman flash mob!

I will be speaking at 1pm about my life as a comic book creator, but I’ll also be selling comics all day with the help of my lovely assistant/wife!  I will be doing a limited number of sketchcards ($1 each), but I am taking 11 x 17 sketch orders in advance.  If you are interested, these full color masterpieces are only $15 and can be pre-ordered now!

Come see me!  Let’s meet and talk about comics!  Bring burritos*!

*You don’t really have to bring burritos.  I imagine that the BPL has a pretty strict anti-food policy, as most libraries are known to do!

MAKIN' LISTS MONDAY - Top 10 Current Ongoing Comics!

If you’ve been following me on Twitter or Facebook, you know that the last month has been CRAZY for me.  I’ve barely been active on either site and, for the most part, I have neglected some of the comics I’ve been working on.  This is obviously a huge bummer.  My Top 10 lists have also been neglected and for that I apologize.  To kick things back in gear, I’m taking a look at the best monthly comic books that I’m currently reading!  Hit the jump to see my list.

Thursday, September 5, 2013

DEAR DINOSAUR - "Walk Out Closet"

Things get experimental in this week’s Dear Dinosaur!  This is definitely the most unconventional strip in the history of the series, so it is one that you totally do not want to miss!  Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com and check it out.  While you are there, read some of the other great comics from the Two for One Crew.  You’ll totally dig it.  Then, when you get back, hit the jump and read today’s commentary!

DEAR DINOSAUR - "Crossover Crisis"

Happy Thursday, True Believers!  It's time again for your favorite dino-centric webcomic (unless you prefer the other webcomic about dinosaurs written by the dude who writes the Adventure Time comic, in which case I'm a little disappointed, but I understand)!  This week's Dear Dinosaur is all about bad ideas and generic superheroes!  Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com to check it out, then come back here for the official commentary!

Thursday, August 22, 2013

DEAR DINOSAUR - "Another Week of Helping Out"

Thursday has come again!  You know what that means, don't ya?  Aww yeah, Dear Dinosaur time!  This week's Dear Dinosaur looks in on an alternate universe populated entirely by evil twins!  As expected, insanity ensues.  Can you imagine a Dear Dinosaur even more evil than the morally challenged advice-slinger we know and love?  Well you better head to Two For One Comics to check it out, then come back here for the official commentary!

Thursday, August 15, 2013

DEAR DINOSAUR - "Dino-Billy Letter Time"

Happy Thursday!  It's that time again--Dear Dinosaur time!  Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com to check out today's Dear Dinosaur, which features the final "new format" forced upon the strip by the Shadowy Board of Editorial Figures.  Once you've read that, head back here for the official Dear Dinosaur commentary!

MAKIN' LISTS MONDAY - The Top 10 Ryan L. Schrodt FAQ

So, in the last week, traffic to my website has literally quadrupled on average each day.  I can only assume this is because of the release of Youngblood #78 last week, which means that a lot of the folks reading this are pretty new to the awesomeness that is Ryan L. Schrodt, Writer of Comics – Destroyer of Worlds.   Since most of you that were around prior to last week have either known me from college or followed me on Twitter for the last few years, I feel like proper introductions are in order.  You can introduce yourself in the comments at the end of this post and I will introduce myself via today’s Top 10 list – The Top 10 Things You Might Want to Know about Ryan L. Schrodt!

YOUNGBLOOD #78 Contest - Update and changes! Enter now!

I’ve received a lot of complaints from friends and followers that were unable to find Youngblood #78 this week, but would like to be entered into the contest, which was set to end tonight at 11:59 PM Central Time.  Given that my involvement was announced only two weeks ago, a lot of stores were unable to put in their orders and the stores that did order them seem to have under ordered them.  So, to make up for this, I’m going to make some changes to the contest.

First of all, the contest will now run until 11:59 PM Central Time on Sunday August 4th so that everyone has the weekend to hunt down the issue.

Secondly, there are now four ways to enter:

1. Purchase the book in a comic book shop, take a picture of you holding it, and send it to me via email, Twitter, or Facebook.
2. Order the comic via an online comic book shop like www.midtowncomics.com.  Take a screenshot of your order (you can crop out personal details) and email it to me at rlschrodt@gmail.com.
3. Purchase the comic online via Image Comics direct (www.imagecomics.com) or Comixology (www.comixology.com).  Take a screenshot of the purchased comic and email it to me at rlschrodt@gmail.com.
4. If you cannot buy it online, but have told your local comic book shop to order it, shoot me an email, Tweet, or Facebook post letting me know what comic book shop you order the book from (store name, city, and state).  This is going on the honor system, so don’t be a dick and lie to me.

Remember the prizes are:

BRONZE PRIZE
Five folks will win a full-color sketchcard of their choice.

RUNNER-UP PRIZE
A color sketchcard of your choice and an original 11 x 17 Dear Dinosaur page.

GRAND PRIZE
A full-color 11 x 17 commission (up to 2 characters), an 11 x 17 Dear Dinosaur page, and a sketchcard!

OREN TAKES FLIGHT in Mice Templar: Legend #5 tomorrow!

Tomorrow is a HUGE day for the OREN TAKES FLIGHT team!  While we are still in the midst of shopping the series around to various publishers, a small glimpse into the magical world will appear in MICE TEMPLAR: LEGEND #5 from Image Comics!  At finer comic book shops all around the country, you can pick up the comic to support not only Team Oren, but also the amazing creative team behind Mice Templar!

I want to offer a huge thank you to Mice Templar co-creator and good friend, Bryan J.L. Glass who offered for us to promote Oren Takes Flight in his book!  I’ve been a huge fan of the Mice Templar books from the very beginning, so this is a huge honor for me!

Oren Takes Flight tell the story of Oren, a young dream who runs away from his quiet life in an isolated valley to go on a wild adventure with a mysterious old hermit, Mr. Kenzo.  This all-ages book is heavily influenced by the works of Hayao Miyazaki, Disney, and Jeff Smith’s Bone comics.  Artist and co-creator Ben Holliday has brought to life a lush and beautiful world filled with dragons, dwarves, fairies, robots, and floating cities, which is then beautifully colored by Joaquin Pereyera and expertly lettered by Adam Wollet!

Head to your local comic book shop on July 24th to pick up Mice Templar: Legend #5!

MAKIN' LISTS MONDAY - Top 10 Comic Book Movies! (Non Superhero)

Woah! It has been forever since I posted a Top 10 list and for that, I am quite sorry.  I have a handful of lists halfway written, but have been bogged down and unable to complete them.  My goal is to have a new Top 10 every Monday from this week out, so hopefully this will be the last time I say “Hey, it has been forever since I posted a Top 10 list.”

This week I’m looking at my Top 10 favorite movies based upon comics that aren’t based on superheroes.  Comic books have a rich history of being adapted into movies, though a lot of these films aren’t often recognized for being based upon our beloved medium (then again, movie goers don’t seem to notice or care that the superhero movies they flocked to are based upon comics, which they can purchase every single week).  Hit the jump to see what movies made my list!

SDCC - Des Taylor's Scarlett Couture from Titan Comics

Announced today at San Diego Comic Con, Titan Comics is publishing SCARLETT COUTURE from "good girl" artist Des Taylor...and I'm marginally involved!  I wrote a special short story for the graphic novel, featuring the sensational superspy in an operation gone wrong.  I had a blast working on the story and cannot wait to see it in print!  More information on the release of Scarlett Couture will be announced in the near future.

Des and I met in 2011 when Mark Millar assigned Des to draw my story "The Battle of Dansroom" for CLiNT Magazine.  Des is one of the most incredible artists in the industry and has a lot of great projects on the horizon, including his multimedia Katie Rogers project. You can learn more about Des on his website!

I want to offer a huge thank you to Des for bringing me in on this project--which will hopefully be just one more of many collaborations for us!

Ryan Schrodt writes YOUNGBLOOD #78 with Rob Liefeld!

The news is out people.  Announced today by the legendary ROB LIEFELD, I scripted Youngblood #78 for Image Comics.

I SCRIPTED YOUNGBLOOD #78 FOR IMAGE COMICS.

A few weeks back, Rob asked me if I would be interested in scripting the issue and I jumped at the chance.  I have dug Youngblood since the earliest days of Image Comics and so I was incredibly honored to join a list of Youngblood writers that includes Joe Casey, Mark Millar, Robert Kirkman, and Alan Moore.  Writing for Image Comics is a lifelong dream for me and I cannot begin to fully explain how special it is to see my name on the cover of a book from THE greatest publisher in comics today!

While I didn’t write the story, which was written by Rob Liefeld, I did write all of the dialogue for the issue.  It was a really cool experience, as I’ve never written in this method before.  Thankfully Rob gave me a great story to work with and artist Jon Malin is a great storyteller.

I’ll go more into the process of scripting the issue once it is out, but for now, I ask that you contact your local comic book shop and demand that they order a copy of Youngblood #78, due out very soon.  If you don’t have a local comic book shop, please know that you’ll be able to buy the comic digitally on Comixology over at www.comixology.com.   And then, once you read it, tell Liefeld (@RobertLiefeld on Twitter!) how much you loved my dialogue so that maybe he’ll ask me back to script #79!

I do want to thank my pals Jordan Jennings and Andrenn Jones who jumped in during the 11th hour to help me with some research for the issue.  These incredible dudes were a huge asset to me as I scripted the issue and I can’t thank them enough!

Been working with for years developing projects! He hits it out of the park on Youngblood #78!! - Rob Liefeld

DEAR DINOSAUR - "Truth or Dino"

Last week kicked off the stretch of new formats for Dear Dinosaur, which will run through the remainder of the volume.  The strip, which featured Dear Dinosaur hosting a talk show, was well received and even received praise from the crew of TV's Bitchin' Kitchen (whose star Nadia G. appeared in the strip!).  Hopefully this week's new format, a game show, will be just as well received.  Head over to www.twoforonecomics.com to check it and then come back for the official commentary!

MAKIN' LISTS MONDAY: Top 10 Network TV '12-13

It’s been way too long since I have posted a Top 10 list and I totally apologize for that.  Lots of things came up over the last few weeks, but I’m committed to getting back on track starting this week!

I am, admittedly, a TV junkie. Since getting a DVR a few years back, I have spent way too much time watching TV.  I watch while I’m writing. I watch while I’m drawing. I watch while I’m reading.  Is this probably something I should be concerned about?  Maybe, but if it weren’t for that addiction, we wouldn’t have this week’s Top 10 list—my Top 10 Favorite Network Television Programs of the 2012-2013 Season!

CON-CANCELLATION: ICBC minICON

Hey everyone.  I'm sorry to say that due to illness, I will not be at the Iowa Comic Book Club's minICON today.  This is the first time I have ever had to cancel on a show and I'm really sorry for the last minute cancellation.  I look forward to seeing everyone in the Des Moines area at I-CON this fall!

DEAR DINOSAUR - "A Bird in the Hand"

Let me start this week’s commentary by apologizing to anyone who was disappointed by the lack of a real Dear Dinosaur strip last week.  I had the page 75% finished before I sliced my finger up pretty bad while cutting potatoes on my mandolin slicer.  Once I was able to take the splint off my finger, I was able to wrap up the page, despite still having a lot of pain.  You can check out the fruits of my labor over at www.twoforonecomics.com and then come back here for the official commentary!

A personal thank you...

As many of you who follow him social media know, my grandfather passed away last Thursday.  We were very close, as "Grandpa Irv" lived with my family from when I was 12 years old on .  The last few days have been very difficult, but the kind words and condolences from my family, friends, and fans were very much appreciated.  As life "returns to normal" over the next few days, I can say that I could not have made it through the last few days and remained sane without the support of so many amazing people.  I don't talk much about my personal life here, but so many fans of my comics stepped over the last few days that I wanted to make a public thank you.

Grandpa Irv was always very supportive of my comic book dreams and his unwavering optimisim and belief in the goodness of human nature will always been an inspirtation to me.  Our mutual love of westerns was a major driving force behind my magnum comic opus, Assumption (two portions of the larger story appeared in Matinee Eclectica).  Though he was by no means a long time reader, Irv did once tell me how much he enjoyed Captain Marvel and Sgt Rock comics in his youth and during his time in the Navy.

In just under two weeks, I will be attending the 3rd annual Kankakee Fantasy Con as a guest.  The show is held at the Kankakee Public Library in Kankakee, IL.  It is easily the smallest show I have ever been to, but it is incredibly well organized and features a great range of comic book creators and retailers.  I have been lucky enough to have at able at the show every year since it began and I’m glad to come back again this year!  You can learn more about their show on their Facebook event page!

Aspiring Comic Book Creator Survival Guide: Pitching (Not a How-To)

I don’t talk much about “the process” as a comic book writer on this site.  There are a ton of resources available for aspiring writers, from books to blogs to webcasts, that will give you all of the insight you need into becoming a comic book writer (or a better comic book writer) far better than I can. While I do have a lot of experience in writing comics and a handful of publications on my resume, I’m still on the ground floor.  That being said, there are some experiences that I’ve had as a writer that are worth exploring.  One of which I’m going through right now—the dreaded “pitching” process.

This week, I began pitching my much-anticipated (by some people) all-ages epic fantasy miniseries OREN TAKES FLIGHT to potential publishers.  Pitching is one of my least favorite parts of being a comic book creator.  No matter how confident you are in your project, pitching will turn you into an emotional train wreck.  It’s not something you ever want to do lightly.

With that in mind, today’s post is my “survival guide” to pitching comics.  I’m not going to tell you how to get your project published, but here are some pointers that you definitely want to keep in mind when sending your work out into the world.

MCBA SpringCon - May 18th!

This Saturday May 18th, I will be attending the Midwest Comic Book Associations annual SpringCon in St. Paul, MN!  This is my first SpringCon, though I was a guest at MCBA’s FallCon in October and I have attended their shows in the past as a fan.  These are awesome conventions that are much larger than your average regional show, but still maintain the intimate feel that you don’t get at the larger national-level conventions.  I’m very excited to be part of the event this year!

Below is a list of the prices for the show and information on what I will be charging for sketches.  If you are interested in purchasing a set of sketchcards or a larger commission, please let me know!  I’d like to have as many of these done as possible in advance!

DEAR DINOSAUR - "Mathemagical!"

This week's Dear Dinosaur is…different.  I'm assuming that all of you have been over to www.twoforonecomics.com to check it out.  If not, go do that now and then come back.  We'll wait.

Are we good?  Ok, let's move on.

So, a few weeks ago I mentioned on Facebook that I was looking for people to draw into an upcoming comic and one of my good friends, a teacher from St. Louis, said that he had student that would be overjoyed at being a "guest star."  We trade some emails and I found out that this young man--the Alex in this week's strip--is a really exceptional dude.  In the last few years, he has experience hardships that no child should ever have to consider and yet, he still approaches life with optimism and creativity.  I won't go into the specifics, but I was moved by this story and inspired by Alex.  And so, this comic was created for him.  It may not be as funny or as silly as the comic normally is, but I think that it has a good message--one that Alex lives by.

Aside from spotlighting this really awesome kid, this strip also drops a major hint at the main storyline of Dear Dinosaur Volume IV, which begins in earnest next week.  Who are those shadowy figures and what plans do they have for Dear Dinosaur?  Come back next week for the answer as I kick off the most ambitious storyline yet!

Since we are dealing with math this week, our soundtrack song is my favorite "math rock" song from Schoolhouse Rock, as covered by Blind Melon!
